Cendekia Iklim Indonesia Advances Indonesia’s Sustainable Economy Through Expert- Led Dialogue
February 27, 2025

Jakarta, 27 Februari 2025 — Cendekia Iklim Indonesia (CII) recently convened a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) titled “Telaah Ekonomi Berkelanjutan Indonesia: Antara Ambisi Pertumbuhan dan Realitas Krisis Ekologi” (Sustainable Economy in Indonesia: Balancing Growth Ambitions and Ecological Crisis). The event brought together nine scholars to address Indonesia’s urgent need for economic models that harmonize growth, equity, and environmental preservation.

Bridging Growth and Sustainability: Key Discussions

The FGD centered on four critical themes:

  1. Visioning Indonesia’s Future: Participants outlined a 20-year roadmap prioritizing human development, equitable access to education and healthcare, and climateresilient social protection systems. Key targets included raising the Human Development Index (HDI) to 70 nationwide and achieving 75% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2045.
  2. Reimagining Economic Models: Experts debated the limitations of GDP-centric metrics and advocated for Green GDP and Comprehensive Wealth frameworks that account for ecological and social costs. Case studies, such as Papua Barat’s conservation-based economy, highlighted the potential of localized, nature-first approaches.
  3. Strengthening Governance: Discussions underscored the need for transparent policies to curb exploitative natural resource practices, alongside decentralization to empower local communities in managing ecosystems.
  4. Data-Driven Progress: Participants emphasized improving data accuracy and accessibility to measure sustainability outcomes effectively.

Outcomes and Next Steps

The FGD concluded with a consensus on three priorities:
1. Balanced Development: Aligning economic growth with social equity and ecological limits.
2. Strengthened Indicators: Adopting metrics like Ecological Footprint and Good Well-being Index to replace outdated GDP-focused evaluations.
3. Political Accountability: Advocating for policies that prioritize long-term sustainability over short-term political gains.

Building on this momentum, CII announced plans to host a “Musyawarah Cendekia Iklim” (Climate Scholars Assembly) in 2025, a multidisciplinary forum to advance Indonesia’s climate-resilient development agenda. The organization will also intensify advocacy efforts with legislators to embed sustainable principles into national legislation.
Why This Matters

As Indonesia strives to become a high-income nation by 2045, CII’s FGD underscores the imperative to redefine prosperity. By bridging expert insights with grassroots realities, CII continues to champion an inclusive, ecologically sound vision for Indonesia’s future.
